The Retroscope: 29 November
The prolific ABBA scored their ninth and last UK #1 single with “Super Trouper”, the group’s 25th Top 40 hit in the UK. The single was originally called “Blinka lilla sterna”, the Swedish title of nursery rhyme, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”. The name referred to the gigantic spotlights used in stadium concerts and such. Abba evidently, as most docile Scandinavians do, preferred the confines of the studio and this was subsequently reflected in the lyrics presented in a jovial, upbeat yet melancholic pop package.
The music video used the largest number of artists that ABBA had ever used. Beside friends populating the set, the rest of the cast were from a circus troupe based in Britain. The spotlight featured throughout the video is, in fact, a CCT Sihouette follow spot, and not an actual Super Trouper!
