The Retroscope: 6 December

1986: Europe reached #1 on the UK singles chart with “The Final Countdown”. They became only the second Swedish act to score a No 1 which topped the charts in 25 countries and the song’s lyrics were inspired by David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”
The song continues to enjoy popularity in many sports arenas and stadiums, public address booths have also often played the opening keyboard riff to rally the home crowd and has become the norm for high school and college pep bands for the same purpose. The distinctive sound of the keyboard riff was achieved by using a Yamaha TX-816 rack unit and a Roland JX -8P synthesizer.
