22 July 1980: The Jam scored their first UK #1 with their tenth release, “Going Underground/ Dreams of Children” – the first single of the 80’s to debut at #1. Their success was largely due to Paul Weller and became one of the more important bands in the UK in the 1980’s.
22 July 1984: Queen filmed the video for “I Want To Break Free” at Limehouse Studio in London, England. It was a parody of the northern British soap opera Coronation Street with the band members dressed in drag. Brian May later said the video ruined the band in America and was banned by MTV in the US.
22 July 1986: Heart went to #1 on the US singles chart with the majestic ballad “These Dreams” and eventually reached #8 in the UK.
22 July 1992: Polygram Records announced in an official statement that Tears For Fears had split up, Roland Orzabal continued using the name but reformed in 2004 though.
