When we recall the nostalgia of the eighties we muse on concepts like new wave, post punk, new romantic or even futurist. Terms which are now conveniently (and appropriately) packaged as adult contemporary today. However, since that period of pop euphoria we are unclear as to where pop culture is heading. For example, could anybody tell me whether there has been any concept albums of note in the last 20 years from new pop acts. Or explain to me why the eighties produced acts which actually sounds more futuristic than what passes as pop today. I guess Alvin Toffler's dark omen of a "disposable society" has unfortinately been realized under the guise of pop culture. But then comes OMD with their new offering: History of Modern, reaffirming my belief that this is what modern pop in the new millenium should sound like. Who would have guessed that they would be waving the synth-pop flag in 2010. There is hope.
