Fellow "Mode Fans" often wondered what Depeche Mode would be over the last three decades if Vince Clarke did not leave after SPEAK AND SPELL - a more flamboyant Dave Gahan perhaps. What was his purpose in the band anyway. Evidently, this enigmatic figure focused soley on studio time and was subsequently viewed as a recluse. Which probably contributed to his success with Andy Bell who was comfortable with the whole creative process. On stage only, Alan Wilder from Hampstead completed the quartet experiencing the second phase of fame. Once a full member of the band, they became the "Depressed Mode" that we adored over the last thirty years.
