Lionel Richie, former economics major at Alabama's Tuskegee Institute, was founder member, saxophonist and vocalist of the Commodores. During his stay he honed his writing and production skills, penned and produced Lady for Kenny Rodgers, cut Endless Love duet with Diana Ross that stayed at the top of US single charts for nine weeks. In 1981, he released his self-titled album, featuring the hits Truly, You Are and My Love. Richie combined his soul musical background and easy listening country influences to emerge as one of Motown's solo megastars. Cross-over appeal meant that he was well received by the country and traditional market earning him awards in both categories. All night long was 1983's major dance floor success, propelling the album to No 1 on both sides of the Atlantic. Can't Slow Down became Motown's all-time best seller with over 14 million sales worldwide with no fewer than 5 Top Twenty singles in the UK. If R'n B existed exist today in its true pop sense today, could they compete with this.
