The Retroscope: 4 April

4 April 1981: Bucks Fizz won the Eurovision Song Contest held in Dublin, Ireland with the UK entry “Making Your Mind Up”. They were apparently formed specifically for the contest and comprised four vocalists: Bobby G, Cheryl Baker, Mike Nolan and Joy Aston. The line-up had endured a few changes though. Two versions of the group exist today, the official version which includes the original member Bobby G and a three member version consisting of Mike Nolan, Cheryl Baker and Joy Aston under the name OBF. 4 April 1982: “Layla” appeared on the UK singles chart which was a re-released track originally featured on the Derek and the Dominos album in November 1970. 4 April 1987: Starship started their two week run at #1 on the US singles chart with “Nothin’s Gonna Stop Us”, a soundtrack to the evergreen “Mannequin”, also a #1 hit in the UK. U2 also entered the US album chart in the same year at #7 with “The Joshua Tree” making it the highest chart entry in America for seven years.
