9 April 1983: David Bowie scored a #1 hit on the UK singles chart with the upbeat “Let’s Dance”, his fourth UK triumph featuring blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn. A US #1 hit as well making it his first single to reach number one both sides of the Atlantic. Bowie had promised some positive dance orientated music on the “Let’s Dance” album as a reaction to the usual apocalyptic themes in the previous decade. Soon after the release of the album, Bowie toured Europe and the UK for the first time in seven years.
9 April 1988: Pet Shop Boys started their two week run at #1 on the UK singles chart with “Heart”, their fourth UK#1. While in America Billy Ocean remained at #1 for two weeks on the US single chart with “Get Outta My Dreams, Get into my Car,” a #3 hit in the UK.
