The Retroscope: 14 May
14 May 1983: Spandau Ballet, originally known as “The Cut”, scored their first and only UK #1 album with “True”. The quintessential pop title track spent four weeks on top of the UK singles chart and reached an impressive #2 in the US. Other interesting offerings on the album included “Gold”, and the infectious “Lifeline” and “Communication”.
Their name refers to Spandau Prison and the many hangings there when victims would twitch and jump at the end of the rope. They were initially inspired by the New Romantic movement and these gentlemen disbanded acrimoniuosly in 1990, but reunited in 2009 – as suave as ever!
