The Retroscope: 6 May
6 May 1989: Former Frankie Goes To Hollywood and bassist for Big In Japan, Holly Johnson, reached #1 on the UK album chart with his debut solo album “Blast”. The album stayed on the charts for 17 weeks and featured the hits ”Love Train”,”Americanos”, “Atomic City” and “Heaven’s Here”. Unfortunately, this exercise in cool ended in the nineties when he embarked on a painting career.
My favourite single off the album is the unforgettable “Americanos” which strangely enforced my childhood aura of invincibility in my white t-shirt and denims. I remember hearing the song for the first time at the impressionable age of eleven knowing that this was something special and everyone had to hear it – and we did!
