The Retroscope: 2 June
2 June 1984: Wham! Scored their first UK #1 hit with the upbeat “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go.” The song was inspired by a scribbled note left by Andrew Ridgely for his parents, originally intended to read “wake me up before you go” but with “up” accidentally written twice and Ridgely wrote “go” twice on purpose. The song entered the UK singles chart at #4 but eventually reached the top spot seven days later and stayed there for two weeks. With this release came the new Wham image of colour and smiles instead of the moodier, politically themed material.
