During the decade of excess, Depeche Mode began looking outside their situation and wrote about money and business. Capturing a brilliant atmosphere which worked well as they were attempting to do something a bit different. As with "Get the balance right", they experimented with various new technology that was available. They used emulators and synclaviers in a conscious attempt to move ina new era of sound. "Everything counts" reached no 6 on the UK charts in 1983 which equalled the success of "See You" in 1982, the first single after Vince left.
