The iconic figure of Nelson Mandela has succumbed to the frailties of mortality when admitted to hospital this week due to an undisclosed condition. Scottish outfit, Simple Minds, began reaping commercial rewards after years building following on pub, club and university tour circuit. Formed from remains of punk outfit Johnny and the Self Abusers, they eventually reached success after Virgin offered the quintet a contract. This spawned a career producing a string of Top Twenty hits on both sides of the Atlantic. As international pressure on the wanton Apartheid Regime grew, the pop charts manifested the growing movement and Mandela Day and This is your Land was released in 1989. The poignant Belfast Child was also released in the same year on the Street Fighting Years album which reached no 1 in the UK. We hope all goes well for the People's President and once the inevitable happens we should take comfort in Alphaville's Forever Young: the memory will be exactly that for his good works.
