In the mid 1980's militants called for making black communities "ungovernable" and a State of emergency was declared in July 1985 in 36 magisterial districts. Organisations and meetings were banned and thousands of people were detained. The commissioner of Police imposed blanket prohibition of media coverage of the Emergency and names of the detained could not be revealed. The government later restricted political funerals, imposed curfews and banned certain indoor gatherings. THe world remain oblivious to the police repression of the masses. In that same year, Foreigner released their gospel-inspired ballad, "I want to know what love is" off their '84 album "Agent Provocateur". This was also their first and only no 1 hit. The irony lies in the two themes "foreigner" and "agent" which the masses rejected with ardent song and dance. "That was yesterday" was their follow up single from the album and in the case of both events we seemed to have forgotten about what happened during that intriguing and surreal era.
