Pop chemistry on the screen

Remember the cool "I knew you were waiting for me" video, when George entered with two bodyguards, a dark room and approaches a large screen displaying Aretha Franklin. During the course of the video both are shown. In front of a screen flashing blips amongst others being The Mamas and Papas at the end of the clip Aretha winks with one eye.
The song was a once-off project that realized George Michael's ambition to collaborate with one of his favourite artists. The song was Franklin's first and only UK #1 hit and her fourth top ten achievement in the country since "I say a little prayer". This would also be the last of her 18 Top 10 hits in Billboard Hot 100.
Michael, on the other hand, enjoyed his third #1 in the UK since going solo. However, as the song was a duet he was not afforded the same status as Gerry and the Pacemakers or Frankie Goes To Hollywood who achieved the amazing feat of their first 3 singles to reach #1. The single was the first Michael had recorded which he had not written himself. The co-writer was Simon Climie who later formed the relatively successful Climey Fisher.
