Superstar injured in a botched fireworks display
On 18 April 1984 while Michael Jackson performed his mega hit "Billie Jean" the special effects went wrong while filming a Pepsi Cola commercial in Los Angeles. Three thousand fans saw a fireworks display erupt behind the pop icon, showering him with sparks that set his hair alight. Audience members said he was so calm, they thought the incident was part of the act. MJ was reported to have covered his burning hair with his jacket as his brothers and stage hands rushed to help. The superstar was then taken to hospital where he was treated for second degree burns. Plastic surgeon Steve Hoeffin said Jackson required surgery to his head and take a few weeks to determine the hairloss.
