Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” is a pure pop creation

Whitney Houston recorded “How Will I Know” for her self-titled album released in February 1985. The song was composed by George Merril and Shannon Rubicam and was originally intended for Janet Jackson but her management team made no commitment to pursue the project. Apparently the track was too weak compared to Janet’s other material. Narada Michael then produced an up tempo version for Houston with altered lyrics. The music video was directed by Brian Grant and filmed prior to the release of the single and album. Grant conjured the abstract theme for the music video and created the on-set maze to create a “lost” feeling. The video featured scenes of Houston dancing in an ultra modern setting of video screens and coloured partitions. Houston was afforded the opportunity to move beyond the staged performance settings to demonstrate her elementary dance moves. Her god mother and her family’s close friend, Aretha Franklin, also made a cameo in the music video. It is quite astonishing to realize how sleek she actually looked with her gun metal gray metallic dress with her out worldly free standing full length sleeves and of course the massive hair bow. It was a rare pure pop creation, simple and energetic and above all as much fun as possible. Consider yourself honoured to have experienced her effortless grace and talent in a golden age of pop gems that is slowly fading into pop obscurity.
