The Retroscope: 21 May

21 May 1983: David Bowie scored a #1 hit on the UK singles chart with his memorable “Let’s Dance” featuring blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn. It was his first single to reach number one on both sides of the Atlantic. It narrowly missed topping the Australian charts, peaking at #2. The song introduced Bowie to a new younger audience oblivious to his flights of fancy in the garish seventies. His next two albums attempted to cater to his new found audience which suffered creatively as a result. 21 May 1983: Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” went back to #1 for the thrid time on the UK charts and stayed at the top for another five weeks. 21 May 1988: Prince scored his first UK #1 album with “LoveSexy”. The cover caused some controversy surrounding its release as it depicts Prince in the nude. Some record companies had subsequently refused to stock it or wrapped the album in black. http://www.bubblews.com/news/531813-the-retroscope-19-may http://www.bubblews.com/news/543911-the-retroscope-21-may
