31 May 1986: The well versed Peter Gabriel scored his second solo UK #1 album with “So”, featuring the Motown and world music inspired “Sledgehammer” and the surreal duet with Kate Bush “Don’t Give Up”. It became the best selling album of Gabriel’s career and was certified triple platinum in the UK and five times platinum in the US. It ranked at #14 on Rolling Stone’s list of “Top 100 Albums of the Eighties” and is included in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. This was his first studio album to keep to its official title from its inception. The title did not mean anything they just liked the form of the word and the two letters. He also favoured a short word title as it meant that the graphic could be more prominent and this was quite useful in marketing the album.
