3 May 1980: Dexy’s Midnight Runners, known as Dexys today, reached #1 on the UK singles chart with “Geno”, a song written about US soul singer Geno Washington - pretty respectable for a bunch of bums! The single was released on EMI and featured the band’s latest recruits: Andy Leek on keyboards and Andy “Stoker” Growcott on drums. The unexpected success of the single also prompted Washington to return to the circuit. Sadly it also saw the departure of Leek who got tired of signing autographs.
3 May 1986: Robert Palmer reached #1 on the US singles chart with “Addicted To Love”, it made #5 in the UK. This was the third single from the Riptide album that featured the longer version running over 6 minutes. It was originally conceived as a duet project, however, Chaka Khan’s voice was removed due to contractual problems.
